About Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC, is a private outpatient mental health practice in Roswell, Georgia providing psychotherapy and psychological testing to adults, adolescents, and children ages four and up. We focus on supporting psychological, emotional, and relational safety and growth along the healing journey. Our Story Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC, was established in 2016 out of a desire to provide mental health care to individuals and families impacted by developmental trauma. Developmental trauma is a term used to describe the long-lasting psychological and emotional effects of adverse experiences and stressors during a person's early development, particularly in childhood. These experiences can have a profound impact on a person's emotional well-being and can influence their behavior and relationships throughout their life. Some examples of developmental trauma include: Child Abuse and Neglect: Physical, emotional, psychological, or sexual abuse during childhood, as well as chronic neglect, in which a child's basic needs are not met, creates wounds that can leave lasting in multiple areas of development. Children subjected to abuse and neglect often struggle with feelings of negative self-concept, difficulties trusting themselves and others, and emotional dysregulation. Early Loss and Separation: Experiencing the death of a loved one or going through permanent or frequent separations from primary caregivers can result in developmental trauma that manifests in difficulties with attachment, emotional regulation, and forming close relationships. One specific form of this type of developmental trauma occurs prior to adoption, when a child is separated from their first parents. Each member of our team has specialized training and experience addressing the needs of individuals who are adopted, as well as their families (first and adoptive), related to the multifaceted and complex nature of this particular kind of traumatic loss. Chronic Illness or Hospitalization: A child facing prolonged illness or hospitalization may experience chronic stress, disruption of routines, pain, and fear associated with such experiences. This can lead to anxiety, depression, and difficulties in coping with future health challenges. Over time, Arbor Cove Therapy has grown to support individuals and families healing from other forms of trauma as well, including: acute (or shock) trauma (e.g. accidents, medical procedures, traumatic loss) vicarious or secondary trauma (i.e. when professional or familial caregivers develop symptoms of posttraumatic stress as a result of ongoing exposure to witnessing or hearing about the trauma of the person they are caring for) religious trauma We also specialize in treating anxiety disorders, complicated grief, ADHD, depression, and childhood behavioral disorders, and, since 2018 when Dr. Lee Anne Dickerson joined the practice, have offered psychological and psychoeducational testing for children and adolescents along with assessments of adult attachment styles. We also help clients through parenting difficulties, challenges with life transitions, and seasons of professional burnout. Each of our clinicians has individual interests and areas of expertise, but we share a core belief that when trauma occurs in relationship it can only be healed in relationship, and therefore approach our work from a relational, attachment-informed lens based on the foundation of Dr. Stephen Porges' precept that "safety (the absence of threat PLUS a feeling of connection) is the treatment." We utilize a holistic approach that recognizes body, mind, and spirit are intertwined and must each be understood from the client's perspective and integrated into the healing process. As a result, we utilize cognitive, somatic, relational, and expressive modalities in our work. We especially love to incorporate play and creativity into therapy and view our clients as the primary drivers of the goals and pace of the work. We invite you to read more about each of us below and let us know how we can help you or your child. • FAQ | Arbor Cove Therapy

The Help Center Find Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Here What are your hours? L. Kathryn Smith, LCSW, RPT sees clients Monday through Thursday. Lee Anne Dickerson, PsyD sees clients Tuesdays through Thursdays. Susan Richardson, MS, LPC, NCC, sees clients every weekday but Wednesdays. Suzanne M. Clark, MS, LPC, sees clients on Mondays. Appointment times are available in the morning, afternoon, and early evening, and we will work with you to find the most convenient time possible for you for us to meet. Do you provide telemental (online / virtual) health appointments? Yes! Our favorite way to meet with people is face-to-face in the office, but we're also very comfortable with telemental health (online) appointments and use them frequently. We also make walk-and-talk therapy appointments available, for those clients who are interested, depending on the clinician you would like to work with. Telemental health services are available for residents of Georgia, Virginia, and Florida, depending upon the clinician you would like to see. Contact us for more information. What forms of payment do you accept? Cash, check, credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express), and health savings or flex spending account cards are all accepted forms of payment at Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC. Payment in full for services rendered is due at the time of each appointment. For clients' convenience, Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC can provide clients with documentation (commonly referred to as a superbill) to submit to their insurance company to request partial reimbursement for out-of-network services. Clients need to confirm out-of-network benefits with their insurance company beforehand, as Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC cannot guarantee benefits. Do you accept insurance? We are out-of-network with all other insurance plans, but can provide monthly superbills to clients who wish to submit their own claims to insurance for any out-of-network benefits available under their plan. Clients are encouraged to check with their insurance company regarding their plan beforehand, as Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC cannot guarantee benefits. Do you offer custody evaluations or testimony in divorce cases? When working with children of parents who are going through a divorce, we ask both parents to agree in writing to waive our participation in court proceedings, out of respect for the value of the therapeutic relationship between our clinicians and their child. Our focus in providing therapy is the psychological, relational, and emotional well-being of the child. Being asked to testify in legal proceedings inevitably damages the therapeutic relationship and costs the child a needed source of support. If a parent is seeking counseling services for their child for legal purposes (such as custody evaluations), we are happy to provide referrals to qualified forensic therapists and psychologists. Other Questions? Please contact Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC, if you have any other questions not answered here. We look forward to speaking with you.

  • L. Kathryn (Katie) Smith, MSW, LCSW, RPT

< Back L. Kathryn (Katie) Smith, MSW, LCSW, RPT Owner / Clinical Director, Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC Background Katie's approach to therapy is informed by interpersonal neurobiology (IPNB), integrating attachment, polyvagal, somatic, and cognitive-behavioral theories based on clients' individual needs and readiness. Above all, therapy is relational, individualized, strengths-based, and collaborative. Katie began her post-graduate career in child welfare, providing a combination of case management, counseling, and supervision services. Over the years, more and more individuals and families shared profound stories of the impact of loss and trauma on the formation of their individual identities and families, as well as the unique and complex challenges of integrating loss and trauma into a cohesive and life-affirming sense of self, especially when surrounding communities and media messages miss or diminish those complexities. In 2011, Katie transitioned into full-time clinical work, with a primary desire to help individuals and families involved in foster care and adoption navigate these unique aspects of life with a sense of being fully welcomed, seen, validated, and joined in their journey. What began as a specialization in mental health needs related to adoption, grief, and loss expanded through additional experience and training to include the related but wider fields of working with various kinds of trauma (shock or single-incident trauma, complex / developmental trauma, spiritual / religious trauma, and vicarious trauma / secondary traumatic stress), anxiety, depression, chronic stress, life transitions, and attachment injuries. Katie especially enjoys working with children and their parents and with adult women facing these challenges. Training & Associations Katie earned a Master of Social Work from The University of Georgia in 2001 and was licensed by the state of Georgia as a clinical social worker in 2005 (#CSW003510). In addition to in-person psychotherapy services with Georgia residents, she provides telemental health services to people in Georgia and Florida (provider registration #179). Katie is a fully certified EMDR (eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapist, which requires an additional 50 hours of sessions using EMDR and 20 hours of consultation with an EMDRIA-approved consultant beyond the basic training standard of 20 hours of instructional material, 20 hours of supervised practicum, and 10 hours of consultation. She is also a registered play therapist (RPT). To obtain the RPT credential, therapists must complete 150 hours of play therapy specific instruction, conduct a minimum of 350 hours of clinical work under the guidance of a play therapy supervisor, and complete 35 hours of direct supervision. Katie's additional training includes multiple aspects of trauma treatment and trauma-informed care, sandtray and other expressive arts therapies, ambiguous loss & disenfranchised grief, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), several models of play therapy (Theraplay (R), child-centered play therapy, filial play therapy, Adlerian play therapy), frameworks of parent coaching & support (Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) (R), Circle of Security Parenting, and Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions - SPACE), internal family systems (IFS), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), polyvagal theory, ARC (Attachment, Regulation, and Competency), ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), and exposure & response prevention (ERP). She is a Circle of Security Parenting (TM ) facilitator and has completed both the practitioner and camp trainings in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) (R), and the 18 month-long Training for Adoption Competency (TAC) initiative of the Center for Adoption Support and Education (C.A.S.E.). • Protections Against Surprise Billing | Arbor Cove Therapy

Notice Regarding Patient Protections Against Surprise Billing When you get emergency care or get treated by an out-of-network provider at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, you are protected from surprise billing or balance billing. What is “balance billing” (sometimes called “surprise billing”)? When you see a doctor or other health care provider, you may owe certain out-of-pocket costs, such as a copayment, coinsurance, and/or a deductible. You may have other costs or have to pay the entire bill if you see a provider or visit a healthcare facility that isn’t in your health plan’s network. “Out-of-network” describes providers and facilities that haven’t signed a contract with your health plan. Out-of-network providers may be permitted to bill you for the difference between what your plan agreed to pay and the full amount charged for a service. This is called “balance billing.” This amount is likely more than in-network costs for the same service and might not count toward your annual out-of-pocket limit. “Surprise billing” is an unexpected balance bill. This can happen when you can’t control who is involved in your care - like when you have an emergency or when you schedule a visit at an in-network facility but are unexpectedly treated by an out-of-network provider. You are protected from balance billing for: Emergency services If you have an emergency medical condition and get emergency services from an out-of-network provider or facility, the most the provider or facility may bill you is your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amount (such as copayments and coinsurance). You can’t be balance billed for these emergency services. This includes services you may get after you’re in stable condition, unless you give written consent and give up your protections not to be balanced billed for these post-stabilization services. Certain services at an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center When you get services from an in-network hospital or ambulatory surgical center, certain providers there may be out-of-network. In these cases, the most those providers may bill you is your plan’s in-network cost-sharing amount. This applies to emergency medicine, anesthesia, pathology, radiology, laboratory, neonatology, assistant surgeon, hospitalist, or intensivist services. These providers can’t balance bill you and may not ask you to give up your protections not to be balance billed. If you get other services at these in-network facilities, out-of-network providers can’t balance bill you unless you give written consent and give up your protections. You’re never required to give up your protection from balance billing. You also aren’t required to get care out-of-network. You can choose a provider or facility in your plan’s network. When balance billing isn’t allowed, you also have the following protections: You are only responsible for paying your share of the cost (like the copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that you would pay if the provider or facility was in-network). Your health plan will pay out-of-network providers and facilities directly. Your health plan generally must: Cover emergency services without requiring you to get approval for services in advance (prior authorization). Cover emergency services by out-of-network providers. Base what you owe the provider or facility (cost-sharing) on what it would pay an in-network provider or facility and show that amount in your explanation of benefits. Count any amount you pay for emergency services or out-of-network services toward your deductible and out-of-pocket limit. For more information, or if you believe you’ve been wrongly billed, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises/consumers for more information about your rights under federal law. The federal No Surprises help desk number for information and complaints is 1.800.985.3059. If you received care in Georgia, you may contact the Georgia Secretary of State's office by calling 404.656.2881 or submitting a question to them online at https://sos.ga.gov/cgi-bin/email.asp. You can also download a copy of this notice: YOUR RIGHTS AND PROTECTIONS AGAINST SURPRISE MEDICAL BILLS OMB Control # 0938-1401. Expiration Date: 03/31/2022 Notice Regarding Patient Protections Against Surprise Billing Act.pdf SUS DERECHOS Y PROTECCIONES ANTE FACTURAS MÉDICAS DE SORPRESA OMB#: 0938-1401. • Psychological Testing | Arbor Cove Therapy

Psychological Testing Psychological and Psychoeducational Evaluations Watermark Psychological & Consulting Services, LLC, and Lee Anne Dickerson, PsyD, provide psychological testing services, as well as therapy, for Arbor Cove Therapy, LLC. Psychological evaluations and psychoeducational evaluations are available for children and adolescents. Reasons individuals request psychological testing: Concerns about development, behavior, academic performance, or social-emotional functioning Clarification of diagnosis Treatment recommendations School accommodations What is the difference between a psychological evaluation and a psychoeducational evaluation? Psychological evaluations and psychoeducational evaluations are both tailored to answer unique questions about the individual being evaluated. A psychological evaluation is a thorough assessment that looks at how a person thinks, learns, feels, behaves, and copes with stressors. This type of assessment provides a diagnosis (e.g. ADHD, anxiety, depression, etc.) and treatment recommendations and is considered a medical intervention. If you have insurance benefits that cover psychological testing, Dr. Dickerson can provide you with a receipt as an out of network provider that you may submit to your insurance company as part of a request for reimbursement. A psychoeducational evaluation focuses primarily on intellectual abilities and academic achievement to help determine strengths and learning differences. This type of evaluation is considered to be for educational purposes; therefore most insurance companies do not provide benefits for a psychoeducational evaluation. What is the process and how long does it take? The evaluation process takes between 2-3 weeks from start to finish. Step 1: Diagnostic Interview – A diagnostic interview involves both the child and parent (or the individual, if evaluating an adult). Dr. Dickerson will meet with the parent and child together and then separately to acquire the necessary information to determine the appropriate tests to be used for the evaluation. Step 2: Testing Appointment(s) - The number of testing appointments depends on the number of tests given and the individual’s response during the assessment. Most testing batteries can be completed in 1 to 2 sessions that last between 2-3 hours each. Step 4: Gathering Collateral Data – Dr. Dickerson will ask you to sign a release of information allowing her to contact other professionals providing care to the individual being evaluated, such as primary care physicians and teachers, so she can obtain records, consult with them, and ask them to complete checklists related to your concerns. Step 5: Scoring data and report writing – Dr. Dickerson will score all of the tests administered and write a comprehensive report for you to have for your records. This report is only shared with other professionals (primary care, school) when requested and with written permission. What services are available for adults? Dr. Dickerson conducts psychological evaluations for prospective parents hoping to adopt who are working with a licensed child-placing agency. She also conducts evaluations of primary attachment style for adults interested in learning more about their own primary attachment style and how it impacts their relationships.
